The weather forecast said 22 degrees and the Bureau of Meteorology reported 16 degrees in the water so we went to beach! After structuring the last two weeks of classes around the themes of “Public Transport” (particularly good for Numeracy lessons) and reading maps, I took both my classes out for an excursion to Shelly Beach in Manly.
The ferry ride to and fro were both memorable, on the way we saw an enormous Japanese fighter ship and marveled at its capacity for destruction, although it seemed so far-fetched moving calmly across the sunny harbour. Then on the way back we saw the fire in Balgowlah being put out by helicopters and reported in the SMH it seems it was a burn-off that got a bit out of control.
Everyone brought food for an enormous picnic (with dinner leftovers) and I even braved the waters for a swim. Has the beach season begun already? In the middle of winter, the sea breeze and warm sun may be the only thing that will help me get over this flu.
