Looking at the photos, we went camera-crazy in this sleepy little village. Not much else to do really, monsoonal rains and the long drive dampened our enthusiasm for its rustic charm. This is the view from our dingy little bungalow, a rude shock after our nice hotel in Hanoi!

We walked in search of something more interesting to the next town. The area was filled with paddy-fields and mountains.

We found nothing interesting but a box of ducklings and this guesthouse on stilts where we passed our afternoon alone with beer and karaoke. Incidentally, I made an excellent rendition Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” and “Black Hole Sun” (originally Max’s choice) but bummed out with Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman”. Max’s “Paint It Black” resonated across the fields and we even belted out an “Eye of the Tiger” together. Nam beat us both with a tuneful “Ly Ca Phe” in Vietnamese.

The interior of the eating bungalow with Max chowing down on the food that would later make him terribly, terribly ill.
